Vietnam, 1950s. Caine plays an English journalist, Fraser a clean-cut young American, the backdrop the handing over of imperialist power from Britain to America in the post WWII years. Director Noyce evokes a strong sense of place and time, and stays faithful to Graham Greene's source novel, but this is worth it for Caine's performance alone.
