Retired cop Jerry Black (Nicholson) finds himself haunted by the promise he made to the mother of a murdered child in this slow-burning, morally ambiguous character study. Nicholson turns in an excellent performance as a man possessed by obsession, while Penn's direction creates a melancholy, atmospheric mood throughout.
