Parental disapproval breeds forbidden love between Gosling and McAdams in a (just about) above-average romantic tear-jerker told mostly in flash-back. The performances are strong but the script is too simplistic to truly satisfy, even if you're the kind who enjoys having their heart-strings tugged.
