Murderball

A documentary on quadriplegic rugby this movie offers both an insight into the world of physically disabled, mentally astute young men and the rivalry of the game. Quad rugby was called Murderball when it originated in Canada in the 1970s due to its physical demands and the souped-up chairs of the players. Today the game has evolved into an intense international battle which culminates at the Para Olympics. It is demanding, dangerous and highly appealing to the players who are always fighting for acceptance and independence on and off the court. Following the stories of the main players, Murderball delves into individual histories of the Canadian and American team members as they prepare for the 2004 Para Olympics. None of these guys feel sorry for themselves, and you won't either, which is how they want it. Where the film falls down is in its examination of the game, happily, this being a DVD, this aspect is covered in the extras. Fight club in chairs, Murderball strikes the right balance between humour, observation and sports documentary, making it must see stuff.
