An excellent cast is let down by a bland ending to an initially intriguing story, in which the parents (Hoffman and Sarandon) of a murdered girl encourage her fiance (Gyllenhaal) to take her place in their affections. Quirky the script may be, but it also bites off more than director Silberling seems prepared to chew.
