1930's Liverpool, as seen through the eyes of young Liam (Borrows) as he prepares for his First Holy Communion, is a pretty dark, dank and desperate place. So desperate, in fact, that the unremitting emotional squalor and anti-Semitism make Liam very difficult going indeed, despite the fine performances of Hart and Hackett.
