Guediguian's Marseille is anything but quiet, its simmering pot of multi-culturalism providing the backdrop to Ascardie's attempts to fund her teenage daughter's cold turkey programme. Deprivation, random violence, prostitution - it's grim stuff all right, but the performances ensure that this compelling tale is well told.
