A dark, brooding rights-of-passage tale, in which confused Long Island house-breaking delinquent Howie (Dano) encounters the pleasant-but-predatory pederast Big John (Cox). Director Cuesta baulks at blatant or exploitative sexuality, but nonetheless L.I.E is a genuinely unsettling experience, asking questions that cannot afford to go unanswered.
