Ashley (Lohan) is a peculiarly lucky young woman (some might call her a jammy b*tch) - everything she touches seems to turn to gold. Jake (Pine) on the other hand, is her polar opposite - nonsensically blessed with Godawful luck, everything he comes in contact with explodes, and stuff. When the two cross paths by chance and neck each other, their luck seems to switch; and both find the repercussions altogether disconcerting. Playing like an Olsen movie with an older cast, Just My Luck is a bit of a mess. Clearly meant to be a fun, light-hearted and fluffy tale, it's most unquestionably fluffy with its heart in the right place - but it's not particularly fun or entertaining. The major problem is the script; it never feels like it has a function other than to distract you, while Lindsay Lohan swans across the screen with a smug smirk, being all trendy. There are plotholes galore (If Jake is so unlucky, how was he born with the looks of a Gap Model?), and a lot of the narrative feels tacked on (McFly, for Christ's sake). The tone throughout is uneven, leading to an altogether predictable and unsatisfying conclusion, where you're kind of waiting to be put out of your misery. It could've been moderately amusing; Pine, for one, is game, showing suitable amounts of charm when called for, and supporting player Armstrong (her out of the Bad Day video) was crying out for more screen time, her character seeming to have both more depth and more to say than Lohan's hard-to-like Ashley. Every time Lohan shares the screen with her, you're left wondering why those roles weren't switched. Ultimately, Just my Luck is a pedestrian comedy that will appeal only to diehard fans of McFly and Lohan.
