Guy X

Soldier Rudy Spruance (Biggs) finds himself in Greenland when he should be in Hawaii. Worse still, no one believes that there has been a transfer stuff up and he is being called by someone else's name. Quickly discovering that escape is futile and that he has lost his real identity, he becomes resigned to the fact that this is his lot and takes on the job of running the base newspaper. That's until he follows his romantic interest Irene Teal (McElhone) and discovers a secret underground hospital, housing nameless, acutely disfigured soldiers. Clandestinely he befriends 'Guy X' and sets about figuring out what is going on.

While it is interesting to see Mr American Pie play it straight - which he does to great effect - there is little else here to engage. The physical setting of Guy X is awesome, but unfortunately the script never rises above your usual conspiracy movie. Director Metzstein certainly knows his stuff (self-parodying film references abound) however, Guy X really doesn't have a clear purpose and the chemistry between McElhone and Biggs is entirely laughable. In fact, in terms of hair and chemistry, it is reminiscent of Kevin Arnold and Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years.
