The emphasis is on character rather than plot in Green's off-kilter study of disaffected American teens - rather than the bored brats of mainstream Hollywood, however, Green's tale concentrates on those dead-end kids who never stood a chance of ever making good. Gruelling in places, George Washington is also unaffectedly touching.
