It is some 66 years since Bob Kane first created this fascinating and flawed anti-hero. Here Batman returns to us as he was intended: a dark, hostile, vigilante, crusading in the name of justice. Nolan retraces Bruce Wayne's roots and gets to the heart of Batman. While Bale portrays the brooding Bruce/Batman expertly, the supporting cast - in particular Oldman, Freeman and Neeson - are equally impressive. Katie Holmes does her usual lopsided lip thing and manages not to get in the way, while Michael Caine cruises as Alfred the Butler. Dark, menacing, furious, funny and very much of our time.
