Bernard O'Shea | The Comedy Cellar

Comedy Feature

06 February 2012 (Comedy Preview)

Words: Robin Murray

Bernard O'Shea, AKA 'The Ginger Bear', is best known from appearing on RTÉ2's Republic of Telly, where he's charmed viewers with his childlike innocence and culchie sensibilities.

If, like me, you've been entertained following his (unrequited) love story with Jennifer Maguire and watching his mad, factually-suspect news reports around the country, rejoice because the loveable LOL- maker is performing live at The Comedy Cellar in International Bar, Dublin on February the 15th.

O'Shea first began performing as a traditional Irish musician as a young child, however when he got older he swapped his instruments for a microphone, winning the Harp Newcomer Comedy Award in 2000. In 2005, he was chosen to perform at the Montréal Just for Laughs festival, going on to play at The Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival the same year.

O'Shea's comedic style is a mish-mash of observational, surreal and musical; stories are often rooted in reality but his imagination has a tendency to take over and bring you to unexpected places. Slightly unhinged at times, O'Shea's humour certainly not predictable!

Another great thing about his comedy is just how Irish it is; from mass to Penneys to shopping in Newry, O'Shea's material relates specifically to a home audience, but avoids being hokey or old-fashioned.

"If I was to get my testicles repaired down South it would cost me fourteen-hundred euro - guess how much it would cost me up North?!"

Quick-witted, with a gift for physical comedy and an accomplished musician to boot, this triple-threat comedian is a tough act to beat.

Bernard O'Shea plays the Comedy Cellar, International Bar, Exchequer St., Dublin 2 on the 15th February.

Show starts at 9.30pm; tickets cost €11.50 and be bought here!
