Will Young - Keep On
Review Date: 02 December 2005
Winners of Pop Idol really aren't supposed to make it as far as their third album. By now, however, even Will Young's bitterest enemies have to admit that the lad has staying power. What's more, he's getting better all the time. He may only have two types of song - polite funk hip-grinders and drippy ballads - but he pulls them off here with style and conviction, letting his personality shine through for possibly the first time in his career. Keep On also benefits from a first-class production, with squelching basslines and classy strings cleverly deployed to stop the proceedings sliding into blandness. True, the songwriting sags a bit here and there and Young's vocal imitations of George Michael don't always convince. But on this evidence, his love affair with the record-buying public has plenty of mileage left in it yet.
